Historic Port Arthur prison ruins filled with many stories from inmates of the past.
The Island State of Tasmania is separated from the mainland by the Bass strait some 240kms away. The majority of its population live around the Greater Hobart area. Initially known as Van Diemens land, Tasmania was subject to the practice of "transportation" where convicts were sent to the island as punishment and kept in penitentiaries and prisons. This practice ceased in 1853.
Today, Tasmania, relies heavily on tourism, agriculture and aquaculture as its main sources of economy. The Island is diverse in appearance with its Huon forests and waterfalls inland and rugged rocky coastlines.
